Update No. 15 - Fireworks Injury Surveillance 2007

Injury Registry Update  

There are 46 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 05 January 2008 is 866, which is 189 cases (18%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or 426 cases (33%) lower than the same period last year. There was one case of firecracker powder ingestion and no stray bullet injury reported.

Cumulative Surveillance Findings

A total of 850 fireworks related injuries, 14 stray bullet injuries, one watusi and one firecracker powder ingestion were reported from December 21, 2007– January 05, 2008 from 50 sentinel sites (Table 2). Forty-one ( 6% ) sustained injuries after January 1, 2008. There was one death (watusi ingestion)

 

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 680 (80%) were males. Ages ranged from 4 months to 84 years (Median 15) : 302 (35%) cases were children 10 years and below. Five hundred eighty-nine (69%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Six hundred thirty (74%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 159 (19%) with eye injury, 61 (7%) with amputation. Four hundred thirty-six (51%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 71 (8%) were under the influence of alcohol.

B. Watusi/Firecracker Powder Ingestion

There was one reported case of watusi ingestion and one case of a 1-year old boy who ingested firecracker powder (Lucis) seen at Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

 

C. Stray Bullet Injuries

There were fourteen stray bullet injuries. Upon verification another two earlier reported were due to deliberate shooting.

 
Status of Reporting of Sentinel Hospitals

Twenty-eight (56%) out of 50 hospitals submitted injury reports.

Update No. 14 - Fireworks Injury Surveillance 2007

Injury Registry Update  

There are 67 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 6:00 AM, 04 January 2008 is 821, which is 223 cases (21%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or 458 cases (36%) lower than the same period last year. There was no new case of watusi ingestion and stray bullet injury reported.

Cumulative Surveillance Findings

A total of 804 fireworks related injuries, 16 stray bullet injuries and one watusi ingestion were reported from December 21, 2007– January 04, 2008 from 50 sentinel sites (Table 2). Thirty-eight ( 5% ) cases sustained injuries after January 1, 2008.

 

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 659 (80%) were males. Ages ranged from 4 months to 84 years (Median 15): 288 (35%) cases were children 10 years and below. Five hundred sixty-one (68%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Five hundred eighty-three (71%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 159 (19%) with eye injury, 62 (8%) with amputation. Four hundred twenty-two (51%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 71 (17%) were under the influence of alcohol.

Injury Registry Update  

There are 168 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 03 January 2008 is 756, which is 246 cases (25%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or four hundred fifty six cases (38%) lower than the same period last year. There was no case of watusi ingestion. There were eleven stray bullet injuries.

Cumulative Surveillance Findings

A total of 737 fireworks related injuries, 18 stray bullet injuries and one watusi ingestion were reported from December 21, 2007– January 03, 2008 from 50 sentinel sites. Five hundred seventy ( 75%) injuries occurred from December 31,2007 to January 1, 2008.

 

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 608 (80%) were males, Ages ranged from 4 months to 84 years (Median 15): 266 (35%) cases were children 10 years and below. Five hundred eighteen (69%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Five hundred thirty (70%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 154 (20%) with eye injury, 52 (7%) with amputation. Three hundred eighty-seven (51%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 60 (8%) were under the influence of alcohol.

There was one reported case of watusi ingestion.

 

C. Stray Bullet Injuries

There are eighteen stray bullet injuries.

Injury Registry Update  

There are 143 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 02 January 2008 is 588, Two hundred thirty-three cases (28%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or three hundred nineteen cases (35%) lower than the same period last year. There was one fatal watusi ingestion. No stray bullet injury.

Cumulative Surveillance Findings

A total of 580 fireworks related injuries, with seven stray bullet injuries and one watusi ingestion were reported from December 21, 2007– January 02, 2008 from 50 sentinel sites (Table 2).

 

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 469 (80%) were males, ages ranged from 4 months to 84 years (Median 15 years): 202 (35%) cases were children 10 years and below. Four hundred twenty-one (73%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Three hundred ninety-seven (68%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 139 (24%) with eye injury, 41 (7%) with amputation. Two hundred ninety-seven (51%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 48 (8%) were under the influence of alcohol.

B. Watusi Ingestion

There was one reported case of watusi ingestion. A 29 year old male from Tondo, Manila allegedly drunk when he ingested 10 sticks of watusi. Dead on arrival at Tondo Medical Center.

 

C. Stray Bullet Injuries

There are still seven stray bullet injuries.

 
Status of Reporting of Sentinel Hospitals

Twenty-seven (54%) out of 50 hospitals submitted injury reports. Twenty-seven (100%) hospitals submitted before the 8:00 AM deadline.

Injury Registry Update  

There are 281 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 01 January 2008 is 446, which is 385 cases (46%) lower than the same period last year. And the lowest number of cases since 1999. There are six stray bullet injuries and no watusi ingestion. No deaths reported.

A total of 439 fireworks related injuries, with seven stray bullet injuries were reported from December 21, 2007– January 01, 2008 from 36 sentinel sites (Table 2).
 

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 350 (78%) were males, Ages ranged from 4 months to 84 years (Median 16 years) : 136 (30%) cases were children 10 years and below. Three hundred nineteen (72%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Three hundred thirteen (70%)sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 96 (22%) with eye injury, 29 (7%) with amputation. Two hundred sixteen (48%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 42 (9%) were under the influence of alcohol.

Injury Registry Update  

There are 31 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 31 December 2007 is 165, which is 24 cases (13%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or 72 cases (30%) lower than the same period last year. There is no stray bullet and watusi ingestion incidence. No deaths reported.

A total of 164 fireworks related injuries, with one stray bullet injury were reported from December 21-31, 2007 from 41 sentinel sites (Table 2).

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 138 (84%) were males, ages ranged from 3 to 71 years (Median 11): 73 (45%) cases were children 10 years and below. One hundred (61%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). One hundred twenty-one (73%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 34 (21%) with eye injury, 9 (5%) with amputation. Ninety(55%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 11 (7%) were under the influence of alcohol. Piccolo is the most common type of firecracker used (Fig.2). Piccolo is now banned and will be confiscated. There is still no fireworks-related tetanus.

There are 15 new fireworks-related injuries reported today. The total number of cases as of 30 December 2007 is 134, which is 26 cases (17%) lower than previous 3-year average (Fig. 1) or 71 cases (34%) lower than the same period last year. There is no stray bullet and watusi ingestion incidence. No deaths reported.

A. Fireworks-related Injuries

Majority, 112 (84%) were males, ages ranged from 3 to 71 years (Median 11): 61 (46%) cases were children 10 years and below. Eighty (68%) cases were from NCR (Table 1). Ninety-five (71%) sustained blast/burn injury without amputation, 29 (22%) with eye injury, 9 (7%) with amputation. Seventy-nine (59%) directly handled firecrackers, among which 9 (11%) were under the influence of alcohol. Piccolo is the most common type of firecracker used (Fig.2). Piccolo caused more eye injuries and blast/burn without amputation (Fig.3). It should be banned and confiscated.
